Furious mum claims teachers shamed her daughter, 6, for bringing a banana muffin in for ‘healthy snack time’

A MUM has made a formal complaint to her daughter’s school after they refused to let her eat a banana muffin for “healthy snack time”.

Tammy Campbell, from New Zealand, said teachers “embarrassed and shamed” her daughter after they took her lunchbox to be inspected by the headteacher.

The mum explained how teachers refused to let her six-year-old eat the muffin, after she packed it in her lunchbox on Monday.

And when Tammy sent her daughter to school with another the next day, the mum claims teachers took the lunchbox to the headteacher’s office to be inspected.

Tammy now says her daughter feels embarrassed and scared she’ll get in trouble for eating her packed lunch again.

“Things like this – being made a spectacle of, in front of her peers – can definitely lead to young children having eating disorders or negative connotations around food or body image,” she said.

“It’s certainly not something that should have been addressed in front of other children. It should have been brought to the parent… not made public, like a public shaming.”

Headteacher Andrew Barker says the muffin was refused because it was brought as a “healthy snack”, with other kids asking why they weren’t allowed to bring muffins as well.

The teacher said the six-year-old was allowed to eat it later that day.

The school apologised and said they did not mean to cause harm

However, Tammy claims she was never informed to pack an alternative, with the school – which has introduced nutrition changes recently – often holding bake sales.

After making a formal complaint, the mum sent her daughter to school with another banana muffin the following day.

The school has since apologised for the “misunderstanding” and said in a statement that they did not mean to cause any harm.
