Six steps to job success

ONE in five Christmas temps will go on to be offered permanent roles, so land one as a festive gift to yourself.

Here JobCentrePlus work coach Simon Lavall shares his top tips.

  1. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY: That festive job you take could land you in pole position to clinch a permanent role. Don’t behave like it is a temp job and it might just turn into a full-time one.
  2. SHOW INITIATIVE: Look out for opportunities to cover other workers’ shifts, work overtime, help to train other staff and so on, showing bosses you are willing and enthusiastic. Ask to shadow colleagues so you can learn more about the job and the business.
  3. KNOW THE COMPANY INSIDE AND OUT: Research as much as you can about your potential employer beforehand, including what sort of work they do and what their aims are.
  4. BE REMEMBERED FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS: Be punctual, always respect your seniors and put as much care and enthusiasm into your job as you would do with a full-time position.
  5. APPLY FOR INTERNAL VACANCIES: Once you are with the company, you will be able to see any job notices and internal vacancies that may come up, which otherwise might never reach the outside world.
  6. DRESS THE PART: Especially if the job requires you to wear a red suit and have a big, fluffy white beard.
