From Love Island to Katy Perry’s wedding: 11 showbiz events to look forward to in 2020

While it’s impossible to know what surprises there will be – Hello, Detective Inspector Coleen Rooney – there are some things we can count on.

With Hollywood awards season returning, the Brit Awards back at the O2 and Glastonbury on the cards, the world of showbiz is set to serve up plenty of treats in the next 12 months.

There are also star-studded weddings to look forward to and TV and film adaptations aplenty.

Here are the 11 showbiz events we’re seriously looking forward to the most in 2020…

Two series of Love Island

For the first time, this year will serve up a double helping of Love Island.

The winter series kicks off in a matter of weeks and in order to ensure the Islanders still get to enjoy sunny climes, the villa is in South Africa (no, not an island, we know).

Following Caroline Flack’s decision to step down from presenting duties, Laura Whitmore will be fronting the show while her boyfriend Iain Stirling will once again be doing the voiceover.

The regular series will then air in June and the host will be confirmed in due course.

And Maura Higgins on Dancing On Ice

One of the indisputable stars of last year’s Love Island, Muara Higgins will be getting her skates on for Dancing On Ice.

Following in Gemma Collins’ footsteps is never easy but if anyone can be as iconic on the ice as The GC, then it’s Maura. Just hopefully without the tumble.

At long last, the US superstar will make her Worthy Farm debut, doing it in style (no pun intended) at Glastonbury’s 50th anniversary event

With seven studio albums under her belt, the hitmaker’s back catalogue is bursting with hits and die hard fans will be hoping she takes the chance to bust out some old classics.

There’s also the question of which A-listers could make guest appearances during her set, especially after the star-studded 1989 tour.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge hits the Golden Globes

The Fleabag writer and actress stole the show at September’s Emmy Awards, giving the best speeches of the night and then posing for the picture of the year while celebrating at Chateau Marmont

When the Golden Globes takes place in early January, she’ll be one of the many stars representing the Brit pack in the Best Actress in a TV Musical or Comedy category.

Kesha’s fourth album

The pop superstar will be kicking off the year by releasing her fourth album, High Road, at the tail end of January.

After 2017’s Rainbow, which subtly addressed a difficult few years overshadowed by her battle with Dr Luke, High Road will see Kesha return to her roots with the Atlantic teasing: “Kesha’s raging again—in the hedonistic rather than anguished sense of the word.”

A new James Bond film

Daniel Craig’s last ever outing as Bond will arrive in cinemas in April and judging from the trailer, the actor is going out with a bang.

Rami Malek will star as a Bond villain while Lasaha Lynch’s character is surrounded in mystery – and rumour has it she could be new 007.

As if that’s not exciting enough, Phoebe Waller Bridge has had a hand in creating the movie too after being brought in to spruce up the script.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s Superbowl performance

After a couple of dud years, the Superbowl halftime show – which is inexplicably bookended by two halves of a sports game – will hopefully see a return to form thanks to the dream pairing of Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom’s wedding

Having got engaged on Valentine’s Day, the couple postponed their plans to get hitched and are expected to head up the aisle at some point in the next year.

While there’s no word yet on what their nuptials will be like (or how much we’ll get to see), we’re hoping for at least a few snaps making it to Instagram.

The Brit Awards

The biggest night in British music is back in March and the evening’s organisers have already confirmed some changes will be brought in

This time around, fans can expect fewer awards and more performances, with artists taking to the stage being given more control over the creative side of their performances too.

The BBC’s adaptation of Normal People

Sally Rooney’s novel was one of the must-read books of 2018 and the BBC will be hoping to create an equally successful TV version.

Filming has already taken place in Dublin, Sligo and Italy, and rising stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal are in the lead roles as Marriane and Connell. If you haven’t read the book, now’s the time to do so.

And a film version of In The Heights

This year’s big screen musical adaptation may have been a letdown but we have high hopes for In The Heights.

The original Broadway show was written by Hamilton creator Lin Manuel-Miranda and the Tony award winner has penned the film too.

When the trailer was released in December, it attracted attention for all the right reasons – and there are no dodgy special effects in sight.

Princess Diana arriving in The Crown

We know, we know – season three of The Crown has barely been out two months, but we’re already excited for the next set of episodes.

The series – which has no air date confirmed but is expected to arrive in November or December – will see a number of new characters arrive, including Emma Corrin as Princess Diana.
