From cleaning glass to toilets, how to use fabric conditioner in the home for more than just your laundry

FABRIC conditioner is not only scent-sational on your laundry, it can spruce up the home too.

It works wonders on glass and walls. You needn’t fork out on a pricey one either. I like Aldi’s £1.09 Almat.

Here’s how to make the most of your own favourite fabric conditioner . . .

  • Wonder wall. Mix a quarter of a cap of fabric conditioner in a bucket of warm water, wash the walls and watch marks disappear.
For mucky fingerprints, scrub using a stiff brush, and then wipe off with a damp cloth.
  • Gleaming glass. My windows and mirrors were always left looking streaky.
I used a capful in a bowl of warm water and wiped the surface with a cloth. Then dried with another to leave them streak-free.
  • Fake it. Freshening up clothes couldn’t be easier with a spritz of Febreze but at £2 a bottle in Asda, it is worth making your own sweet-smelling concoction.
Use an empty spray bottle (wash out an old one — or I have bought them in Poundland), pour in a capful of fabric conditioner, top up with water and spritz away.
  • Floor hack. Next time your wooden floor needs a wash, add a capful or two of fabric conditioner to the mop bucket and fill with hot water. The floorboards will be shiny and smell fresh.
  • Brush to it. DIY and arts ’n’ crafts can leave the bristles on your paint brushes hard.
Fill a jar or cup with water and add a teaspoon of fabric conditioner.
Mix well, then dip brushes into the solution to soften the paint and strip it off.
  • Toilet tricks. Pour a mug of conditioner into the tank of your toilet and leave for at least five minutes, then flush. It will mix with the water in the cistern so each flush gives off a fragrant pong.
