And when it comes to pizza, you could save yourself even more if you choose a supermarket own brand over a leading brand such as Goodfellas. But which will give you the best Friday night takeaway experience?

The Sun’s Squeeze Team is on the case, with writer and mum-of-three Lynsey Hope taste-testing some of the best known frozen pizzas to see how they compare, with ratings out of ten.

Morrisons Stonebaked Four Cheese

Morrisons' Stonebaked Four Cheese is a pretty decent and filling meal for just £1.35

Morrisons’ Stonebaked Four Cheese is a pretty decent and filling meal for just £1.35

LYNSEY says: “This pizza was quite heavy on the cheese, but it had a nice taste. The base was thin and crispy, which is good, and there was a generous amount of melted mozzarella on top. It was one of the fastest to cook — taking less than 13 minutes in the oven — and great value, too. Is it as good as a more expensive, fresh pizza? I’m not sure about that, but you can’t argue with the fact that it’s a pretty decent and filling meal for just £1.35.”

Waitrose Thin and Crispy Mozzarella, Cherry Tomato and Pesto Stonebaked

The crust of Waitrose’s offering was very dry and tasted like cardboard

LYNSEY says: “This looked appetising as it came out of the oven and the pesto really added something to the toppings, creating a lovely flavour.

“However, despite following all cooking instructions, the crust was very dry and tasted like cardboard. I was left feeling disappointed and wouldn’t bother buying it again. It was even more expensive than Goodfellas.”

LYNSEY says: “From freezer to plate, this pizza cooks in just 12 minutes so is ideal if you need a quick meal. The cheese was lacking and it was quite heavy on the tomato sauce. It was ok, but not my favourite. There could have been a bit more crust to make slices easier to hold and eat.”

Lidl Trattoria Alfredo Cheese and Tomato

Once cooked you could barely tell Lidl's offering apart from the Goodfellas equivalent

Once cooked you could barely tell Lidl’s offering apart from the Goodfellas equivalent

LYNSEY says: “This looked particularly underwhelming in the box, but once cooked you could barely tell it apart from the Goodfellas equivalent. They tasted virtually the same, too. Basic but great if you’re after a quick, cheap and filling meal.

“You will notice the difference on your shopping bill, as at 66p the Lidl pizza was £1.49 cheaper than Goodfellas, which is an incredible saving. The pizza was basic, but it tasted alright and we put it near the top of the leaderboard for its fantastic price.”

Dr Oetker Quattro Formaggi

Even though is more expensive than others, Lynsey thinks this is a solid choice

Even though is more expensive than others, Lynsey thinks this is a solid choice

LYNSEY says: “This had a really lovely flavour with lots of gooey cheese on top. The base was incredibly thin and very crispy and light, which I liked. It’s much pricier than some of the others though so the question is, is it worth the extra money? I think maybe it is. For £2.75 I can imagine this would make a lovely meal for two on a summer’s evening with a bit of salad and a glass of wine on the side.”

Aldi’s Everyday Essentials was the worst of the pizzas reviewed

LYNSEY says: “I felt pretty excited to buy a pizza for just 66p, but it didn’t blow me away. It was extremely basic. You really get what you pay for here. The base was quite dry and there wasn’t enough cheese on top. It went a slightly funny colour after it was cooked and didn’t look terribly appetising. I’d rather pay an extra 34p for a Sainsbury’s pizza, or go to Lidl.”

Goodfellas Stonebaked

Lynsey didn’t rate Goodfellas Stonebaked

LYNSEY says: “I didn’t rate this. It’s not worth the extra money when you can buy one almost identical in Lidl for 66p. It took around 17 minutes to cook. There was nothing much not to like about the pizza. It was thin and crispy, the cheese was good and plentiful. The leftovers tasted pretty good when eaten cold the next day. I just feel it doesn’t represent the best value for money.”

Tesco’s Deep Pan Cheese is a nice deep-based pizza

LYNSEY says: “A nice deep-based pizza. The crust was nice as was the mozzarella, but I couldn’t taste any of the herbs — basil, marjoram or oregano — listed in the ingredients. It was quite bland. That said, the kids enjoyed it and it’s not a bad thing to have stashed in the freezer for a rainy day.”

Sainsbury’s Deep Pan Cheese and Tomato

Lynsey rated Sainsbury's Deep Pan Cheese and Tomato 10/10

Lynsey rated Sainsbury’s Deep Pan Cheese and Tomato 10/10

LYNSEY says: “A really delicious pizza at an amazing price. It had a soft, doughy base and a nice cheesy flavour. It was smaller in circumference than most of the others but very deep and not greasy at all. It took quite a while in the oven — around 22 minutes — but definitely minimum effort for maximum taste.

“You could add your own toppings if you wanted to jazz it up a bit too. I loved this — and so did my fussy kids. Great tasting pizza for a quid. This is such great value. I’d definitely buy this again.”
