Fresh Philippe Coutinho snub confirms Bayern Munich spell set to end

Leroy Sane has been handed the No 10 shirt at Bayern Munich – the number currently worn by Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian has spent the year on loan at the Bundesliga champions but they have decided not to purchase the player permanently, according to reports.

It leaves Coutinho’s future in doubt with parent club Barcelona unsure as to whether they see him as part of their long-term plans.

Sane’s arrival is a major coup for Bayern who have acquired the German from Manchester City for £54.8m.

However, out of respect, the 24-year-old did not flout his new Bayern No 10 shirt when he was first pictured.

Leroy Sane has completed his move to Bayern

The club said: “Out of respect for Philippe Coutinho, who is the current number 10 and could play in the upcoming DFB-Pokal final in Berlin and any games in the Champions League in August, Sane decided not to use the number in his photos on Thursday.”

Coutinho has made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarians scoring nine times.

And chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has kept the door open to another move for the former Liverpool man by saying: “We’ll see if he still has a role to play with us or not.”

But Bayern skipper Manuel Neuer didn’t not hide his happiness at joining up with his compatriot.

Philippe Coutinho’s future is up in the air

He said: “I hope [Sane] can win the Pokal with Bayern in the future, we Bayern players are happy that he will be with us next season.”

While boss Hansi Flick said: “We’re happy, but it’s not the time to talk about it.”

Sane’s arrival certainly takes up a bulk of Bayern’s transfer budget with the club not known for paying over the odds for players.

The impact of the coronavirus is also likely to have a huge affect on club recruitment meaning Coutinho may be forced to remain at the Nou Camp.
