Freddie Mercury's mum Jer talked beautifully about how she coped with losing him

Freddie was devoted to his family, even though his life took him far from home and everything they knew. He died in 1991, far too young at just 45. Today would have been the birthday of his beloved mother Jer, who passed away at the grand old age of 94 in 2016. She was once asked how she came to terms with losing her only son and her answer was perfect and quite beautiful.

In a rare interview in 2012, Jer spoke movingly about her famous child.

She said; “It was a very sad day when he died in November 1991, but according to our religion when it is the right time you cannot change it.

“You have to go. God loved him more and wanted him with Him and that is what I keep in my mind.

“No mother wants to see her son die, but, at the same time, he has done more for the world in his short life than many people could do in 100 years.”

Jer famously used to turn up at the annual Freddie Mercury birthday celebrations thrown in later years after his death.

She confirmed she took strength and comfort from how her son’s memory never died, preserved forever by his music and his fans.

Jer told The Telegraph: “His passing doesn’t seem more than 20 years ago. I still feel he is around because his music is played so often.

“It reassures me that he is still loved by people all over the world, but of course, none of them love him as much as his mother.”

Jer and Bomi Buldara raised Freddie and his sister Kashmira in Zanzibar, where the Queen idol’s father worked for the British colonial government.

Following the revolution, they fled to the UK in 1964 for a safe suburban life in Middlesex.

Although Freddie’s career took him all over the world, Jer revealed her “dear boy” still liked to come home and leave his fame and stage persona at the door.
