However, Solskjaer argued after United’s victory that Rashford could not have made the impact he did without players such as Fred laying the groundwork his tireless energy in the middle of the park.

‘I’m sure Fred covered every little single blade of grass on that pitch,’ the Norwegian said.

‘It’s unbelievable how that boy just recovers for the next game.’

The Brazilian added: ‘And the other important thing is that we didn’t concede a goal today.

‘One more clean sheet, so this is important for us, two games and two clean sheets, so we have to continue in this manner.

‘So we have to rest and prepare for the next game.’

Fred believes Rashford deserves all the praise that has come his way for his work both on and off the pitch in recent weeks.

‘Man, very happy for him,’ he said.

‘First because he’s doing what he’s doing off the pitch. Everyone is following it.

‘This is an extraordinary job and he’s been doing a great job on the pitch too.

‘Today he came in and did a hat-trick. This is important to us, important to the group, important to him.

‘So we’re very happy for him, for everything he’s been doing.

‘I hope he grows more and more as a person and as a player too.’
