Fred believes a lack of consistent game time has restricted his ability to perform to his usual level, suggesting he’s been low on confidence in recent months.

The Red Devils pulled off a shock 3-1 win over PSG in the Champions League to advance to the last eight of the competition on Wednesday night.

Fred started the game for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, which was just his 18th appearance of the season so far despite a £52 million signing in the summer.

He’s endured a turbulent start to his career at the Manchester club, with repeated struggles to break into the team under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer.

However, he performed well in Paris against the Ligue 1 club, and he noted the match as his most enjoyable game so far for the club.

‘This was my best moment since I moved to Manchester United,’ Fred told ESPN. ‘I felt had a great game. It’s a long time since I played like this: two games in a row. I’m very happy. I want to continue to play like this, to play games.

‘I wasn’t surprised that we won. All the team played well. I played well. We knew it was going to be hard, but we are Manchester United.

‘PSG knew that whatever happened in the first game, that we are still Manchester United.

‘We have injuries but we are Manchester United. That is our name. Everybody knows us around the world. It was great that we got the win in a place like this.

Fred also admitted he’s struggled to adapt to life at United due to his lack of game time.

The 26-year-old is hoping more minutes in the pitch can help to improve his football even further.

‘It’s been a hard few months,’ he added. ‘I have not been playing. There has been a lot of things going on in my mind.

‘Ole has helped me a lot. He had a lot of chats with me. [Michael Carrick] also speaks to me a lot. That brings me calm that things will turn around for me.

‘They trust me and I feel that trust. And they were right to trust me because I showed tonight [on Wednesday] that I can play against one of the best teams in the world and play well.

‘I’m very, very happy. My confidence is getting better.’

United’s next game is against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.
