Frank Ocean returns with new single DHL and fans are convinced the artwork features album clues

Frank’s back

Frank Ocean has made a much welcomed comeback with the premiere of his brand new single, DHL, and it’s earned rave reviews from fans who are already theorising about his next album.

The Swim Good singer debuted his new song on his Beats 1 radio show, blonded, over the weekend.

DHL is Frank’s first single since his stunning cover of classic ballad Moon River in 2018.

And it’s proved to be a hit with fans who have heaped praise on his new musical direction.

One stated so eloquently: ‘THIS S**T BEAUTIFUL,’ while another reviewed: ‘I am about this new Frank Ocean song.’

The artwork for DHL features Frank sitting on a chair with a paper bag over his head, wearing only a pair of underwear and socks while waving at the camera.

On the bottom right of the cover are 13 silhouettes of Frank in different positions, including the image of him on the DHL artwork, which is highlighted.

It’s led fans to suggest that DHL will also be the title of Frank’s next album and will feature 13 tracks.

‘Idk if anybody noticed this yet but I’m assuming the Album is Done & this is Track 4 out of 13 guessing from the Coverart [sic],’ one eagle-eyed fan pointed out.

Another quipped about the notoriously long wait for new Frank music: ‘Frank Ocean dropped a new song called #DHL That means we have 2 years of waiting before he drops his next album.’

During his Beats 1 show, Frank also teased two other songs that are on the way – a Sango remix of the track Cayendo, and another called Dear April. Both are currently available for pre-order as 7” vinyl singles on Frank’s website along with videos of them being DJ’d in remix form.

Does DHL feature clues about Frank’s new album?

Last month, Frank revealed that his new music is inspired by a club sound which will make for a departure from his trademark R&B.

‘I’ve been interested in club, and the many different iterations of nightlife for music and songs. And so the things I look at now have a lot to do with those scenes: Detroit, Chicago, techno, house, French electronic,’ Frank told W magazine.

‘The expectation for artists to be vulnerable and truthful is a lot, you know?—when it’s no longer a choice. Like, in order for me to satisfy expectations, there needs to be an outpouring of my heart or my experiences in a very truthful, vulnerable way. I’m more interested in lies than that. Like, give me a full motion-picture fantasy.’

Frank, 31, is at the centre of controversy after he announced a New York City club night PrEP+, which is named after an HIV prevention drug.

Defending the name, Frank wrote on his Tumblr page: ‘I decided to name, what was otherwise going to be a night of lights and music inspired by an era of clubbing that I loved PrEP+ because…

‘I started to imagine in an era where so many lives were lost and so much promise was lost forever along with them, what would it have been like if something, anything had existed that in all probability would’ve saved thousands and thousands of lives.’
