Frank Lampard told his Chelsea players he was proud of their performance against Liverpool and said he could begrudgingly accept defeats if his team played in the manner they did today.

First-half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino saw Premier League leaders Liverpool seize control of Sunday afternoon’s clash at Stamford Bridge.

But Chelsea produced a spirited performance after half-time and halved their deficit with 20 minutes remaining when N’Golo Kante capped off a fine run with a superb finish past Adrian.

Despite putting Liverpool under severe pressure, Chelsea were unable to find an equaliser as they slipped to a defeat which sees them remain in the bottom-half of the table.

But Lampard felt Chelsea were the better side across the 90 minutes and expressed his pride to the team in the dressing room afterwards.

Asked what he told his players following the 2-1 defeat, Lampard said: ‘I told them that I felt that we were right in the game.

‘Tammy Abraham’s chance, the disallowed goal and the free-kick from them was fantastic.

‘I said I don’t mind losing, I won’t take Sheffield United at home [which ended 2-2], but I can take today.’

Asked whether he felt Chelsea deserved at least a point, Lampard responded: ‘On the performance, yes. The second half especially.

‘It’s moments that cost you. The second half is where we want to be, energy passion and moving the ball quickly. We need points though.’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, said: ‘The first half was also hard work. It is about momentum in games like this and I think we got that in the first half.

‘We scored two wonderful goals and we could have scored directly after half time two more. We deserved the three points, it is a difficult to win here.’
