Frank Lampard ‘plans to merge Chelsea first-team and academy kids’ to encourage youth development

FRANK LAMPARD will bring together the first team and the youth sides when he becomes Chelsea’s new manager.

The 41-year-old has been in negotiations with his old club after Derby allowed their boss to discuss the potential move.

And one of the first things the former Blues star will do will be to integrate the stars of the future into the first-team squad.

According to The Telegraph Lampard will “allow the academy players to mix with the senior professionals at the Cobham training complex”.

And he will also “instruct the youth coaches to vary training times, so that he can watch either after or before working with the first team”.

One of the main reasons why Chelsea have moved for Lampard to replace Maurizio Sarri is his desire to develop youngsters.

MORRIS IN AS ASSISTANT

At Derby last season in the Championship the Blues’ record goalscorer blooded Premier League wonderkids into first-team football.

This of course included the likes of Chelsea youngsters Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.

Should Lampard get the Stamford Bridge gig, he is expected to bring with him Jody Morris as assistant manager.

The pair worked together at Derby last season, and Morris is a former Chelsea player and U18s manager.

SunSport reported that Lampard is already believed to have signed on the dotted line for Chelsea, and that there will be an announcement on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

The West London club are thought to have given him a three-year contract, on a salary worth £5.5million per season.

That is an upgrade on Maurizio Sarri’s £5m paycheck but some way short of his top-six rivals, as well as Manuel Pellegrini and Ralph Hasenhuttl.
