Frank Lampard hails Tammy Abraham for proving critics wrong for Chelsea


Frank Lampard praised “incredible” Tammy Abraham for proving all of his doubters wrong.

Abraham is now the highest scoring English striker after his spectacular opener at St Mary’s made it nine goals in all competitions this season as Chelsea made it three wins in a row.

Chelsea boss Lampard said: “I trusted in Tammy at the start of the season. I felt it was his time to come back to Chelsea. I know people point to the circumstances but he has Olly Giroud – a World Cup winner. And Michy Batshuayi who is a great Premier League striker too in my opinion.

“He (Abraham) has made the position his own in the short term. Over the season we will need everybody and he deserves a great start to the season. I will keep on him because I want more.

“Tammy’s goal was incredible. It’s confidence. When people are in good form, things happen for them. And that comes from how Tammy has handled himself all season form the early moments when people were questioning him.

“The work ethic behind the scenes that gets him in such good nick. He’s not just a handful for defenders, he has good feet, holds up the ball well. He is also getting goals which is brilliant for him.”

Chelsea are now up to fifth place in the table but Lampard believes they can get higher although he admitted they are a long way off the very top.

“We are nowhere near the finished article. At the moment the benchmark is Liverpool and Manchester City . We have to cut out those little mistakes,” said Lampard.

“And while we’re on a nice feel, the reason we are playing well is because of our hard work and how together we are and if we can keep going with that then yes, we will challenging right up there, I hope.”

Meanwhile, Lampard did condemn Chelsea fans who chanted about “pikeys.” He added: “We don’t want to have chants and stuff that is discriminatory to anyone. I think we all need to look at it. It’s a wider problem than Chelsea, without a doubt. But it shouldn’t stop us talking about it.”
