Frank Lampard exposed Jose Mourinho’s ‘cavemanish’ tactics with Chelsea’s emphatic 2-0 win against Tottenham on Sunday.

That’s the view of Arsenal legend Paul Merson, who believes the game has ‘moved on’ since Mourinho was once regarded as the best manager in the world/

Chelsea switched to a 3-4-3 formation against Spurs and ran out deserved winners, in what was the most impressive victory of Lampard’s short reign so far.

It meant another defeat in a ‘big’ game for Mourinho, which was once his specialty at the likes of Chelsea and Inter Milan.

Merson accused Mourinho of setting-up defensively because he was scared of losing the game and says Lampard’s risky tactics exposed the Portuguese as ‘cavemanish’.

‘Chelsea were outstanding against Spurs,’ said Merson.

‘They made Mourinho look a bit ‘cavemanish’. The game’s moved on. He had three centre-halves and a centre-half as a holding midfielder.

‘He set them up not to get beat against Chelsea and to win the other three games they’ve got over Christmas and it backfired. As a Chelsea fan, I’d have looked for a draw, but by the end I was disappointed it wasn’t five.

‘Chelsea were absolutely brilliant. Frank’s been fortunate because the older players have turned up to the party. This was Chelsea’s cup final, their biggest game of the season.

‘Chelsea beat anyone when the game was like it was against Spurs, but it’s when teams set up with 10 men behind the ball that they find it tough’.

Spurs were similarly disjointed in the first half of their 2-1 win against Brighton on Saturday.

However, goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane after the break gave the hosts a much needed three points against the Seagulls.
