Frances McDormand Takes On Shakespeare's Most Formidable Female Character

In a light-bulb casting moment, Frances McDormand – she with a CV spanning three decades of hard-hitting roles – looks set to take on Shakespeare’s most formidable female for her next venture. The two-time Oscar winner is in talks to play Lady Macbeth – opposite Denzel Washington’s Macbeth – in a new adaptation of the tragedy by husband Joel Coen.

While the husband-and-wife duo has worked together many times before (Fargo, Burn After Reading, Hail, Casear!), the film could be a career-first for the director – who is working from his own script based on the original text – as rumours suggest that his brother and frequent collaborator, Ethan, will not be involved in the production.

McDormand joins a plethora of notable names who have portrayed the wife so infamous that her story has inspired a number of its own spin-offs. Helen Mirren and Vivian Leigh (opposite then-husband Laurence Olivier) both played Lady Macbeth on stage for the Royal Shakespeare Company, while Judi Dench and, most recently, Marion Cotillard (alongside Michael Fassbender in the titular role) have depicted the character in screen adaptations. However, it won’t be McDormand’s first time to the part – she appeared as Lady Macbeth in Berkeley Rep’s 2016 production.

Produced by Scott Rudin and distributed by A24, filming is expected to begin later this year.
