Travellers jetting off to France have been issued a warning from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office ahead of the first anniversary of the Yellow Vest (Gilets Jaunes) Movement. Protests are expected to break out over the period, which could cause chaos across the region. Though the protests are often peaceful, the government warns that they can suddenly turn violent. Tourists heading to the country are advised to keep an eye on developments and relevant news.
While the leaders have not threatened another wave of protests, the request for a conversation has been considered suggestive.
The original protests caught France’s President Macron unaware in 2018 and were considered very damaging.
The movement sprung to life after impromptu backlash against planned fuel tax hikes and the cost of living.
However, they soon developed into a violent revolt against Macron, who has been deemed as “pro-rich” and “out of touch” with the day-to-day struggles of ordinary citizens.
This is just the latest travel warning for Britons heading off to the country.
Last month France was hit by devastating storms and flash floods, wreaking havoc on the nation.
In the south of the country, an average of two months worth of rainfall fell in just six hours.
Meanwhile, there were reports of severe injuries, with one resident swept 100m away from her home by powerful floodwaters.
Italy and Spain also suffered similar destruction as a result of the harsh storms.
