Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger has died from complications of coronavirus according to reports.

He had been on a ventilator fighting the respiratory virus, but passed away aged 52 after complications.

He died on Thursday morning and is survived by two daughters.

The singer’s lawyer Josh Grier had earlier said that he was ‘very sick’ and was being treated in a New York hospital, telling Variety: ‘He is very sick and is heavily sedated, as are all people on ventilators, but no one has used the word “coma” to me.’

He also explained that Adam had been in hospital for over a week and was receiving ‘excellent medical care’.

The band Fountains of Wayne, which he co-founded in 1995, are best known for songs such as Stacey’s Mom and Mexican Wine.

Adam also won awards for his work on the comedy My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, winning an Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics for the song Antidepressants Are So Not A Big Deal.

The songwriter was also nominated for an Oscar in 1997 for his work on the musical movie That Thing You Do!

New York, where Adam was being treated in hospital, is the state with most cases of coronavirus and deaths caused by complications of the infection in the USA.

Citizens have been advised to practise social distancing in a bid to prevent more people being infected by the virus, which can be deadly.
