Fortnite will be a PS5 and Xbox Series X launch game

Not only will Fortnite be available day one for the next gen consoles but an update in 2021 will have it running on Unreal Engine 5.

The amazing Unreal Engine 5 tech demo is not the only major news from Epic Games today, as they’ve also revealed that Fortnite will be a launch title on both next gen games consoles.

There’s no suggestion it’ll be very much different from the current versions, but having it as a day one launch game is an important announcement given how few good games tend to be available on new consoles in their first few months (or even years) of life.

‘We will release Fortnite, built with Unreal Engine 4, on next gen consoles at launch and, in keeping with our commitment to prove out industry-leading features through internal production, migrate the game to Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021’, said Epic on their latest blog.

When Fortnite first appears on the new consoles it will be running on Unreal Engine 4.25, the latest version of the graphics technology that will also be used by many other launch games on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Developers won’t get a chance to work with Unreal Engine 5, the technology behind the Lumen In The Land Of Nanite tech demo, until next year but Fortnite will be updated to use it and its next gen tricks.

But although Epic’s stated goal is to have photorealistic visuals with Unreal Engine 5, Fortnite has a much more cartoonish art style, so it’s going to be interesting to see how far they take the technology.

Like all the other versions, Fortnite on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will be free-to-play, so congrats – you’ve automatically added a new next gen game to your collection!
