Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson is thrilled with the impact Bruno Fernandes has made since his January arrival at Old Trafford and believes he has the skill-set to be labelled the ‘modern day Paul Scholes’.

The 25-year-old arrived from Sporting in January for around £67m and came with plenty of hype after some sensational goal-scoring exploits in Portugal.

The midfielder has taken no time at all to start living up to that hype, settling in at Manchester United very quickly, already becoming an integral figure in the first team and contributing goals and assists.

The Portugal international has already scored twice and provided three assists in just five Premier League appearances for the Red Devils, while he has also netted in the Europa League for his new club.

There is plenty of excitement around Fernandes among the United faithful and their former captain shares that fervour for the man who has now taken up his former role in the middle of the Red Devils’s midfield.

However, it is not himself that he sees in Fernandes, but another Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes.

‘No question, he’s the modern day Paul Scholes,’ Robson told the Sun of Fernandes. ‘He’s brilliant at finding little pockets of space.

‘Then he’s got the same vision to hit those great balls that Scholesy used to hit — and he’s also got a goal in his locker.’

Fernandes has not just impressed on an individual level, but the team has been performing brilliantly since he landed at the end of January.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are on an 11-match unbeaten run, nine of which have come since Fernandes’ signing, and Robson believes he has given the place a lift.

‘Ole’s lads were on an 11–game unbeaten run,’ said the 63-year-old. ‘You can see that he’s improved the atmosphere.’

Marcus Rashford agrees with Robson, and while the England striker has not been able to play with Fernandes yet due to a back injury, he has felt his influence on the training pitch and around the club in general.

‘He’s got such a positive attitude, and the vibe he brings to the team is just positive. Even when he does lose the ball or makes a mistake, he’s always running, working out to win it back,’ Rashford told Bleacher Report.

‘I think that definitely rubs off on the other players. He’s had a positive impact and, you know, hopefully he carries it on.’
