BBC Radio four’s Peter Hobday has died aged 82.
The former Today show presenter was a regular DJ on the show for 14 years.
While on Newsnight, he became the host and economic specialist for three years.
Former Today host James Naughtie, who worked with Hobday described his pal as ‘a very learned man, terribly well-read and a man of vast accomplishments.
‘If you don’t have a personality there’s no point, and Peter had a wonderful, warm and embracing personality.
‘It was said that by the mid-1990s his style was a bit 1980s. That’s what he felt had been the reason for his departure. I don’t know whether that was true or not, but he was much missed.’
Fran Unsworth, director of BBC News continued: ‘Peter was a warm and engaging presenter who was much liked by audiences.
‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends.’
Tributes have also poured in online for the former radio DJ.
Sorry to hear Peter Hobday has died.
On 9/11 I was with him at a conference he was chairing.
As the horrifying news trickled in coupled with lots of false rumours, I asked, “Wow. Where do you start with a story like this?”
“You start with the facts,” he said gently.

Sad to hear about the passing of Peter Hobday, one of the old school but always entertaining and a better interviewer than Humphrys. I always remember him reading the weather: ‘Thickening cloud, sounds like my waistline’ #bbcr4today

Very sorry to hear of the death of Peter Hobday. A mainstay of @BBCr4today for many years. Memorable dispatches from the fall of the Berlin Wall. A real gentleman of the airwaves. @bbcnickrobinson @JustinOnWeb @MishalHusain

Sorry to hear about Peter Hobday. He was the coolest of interviewers. I recall one French interviewee with extremely faltering English. Peter spoke to him in French and translated his answers. Live. All in a morning’s work #R4Today
