Former Arsenal star to take legal action over sacking due to coronavirus

Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song is taking legal action against his club after was sacked due to the coronavirus crisis.

Song, who spend seven years at the north London club, claims he and eight of his Sion team-mates were fired by the Swiss side after the pandemic forced leagues across the world to shut down.

The 32-year-old claims he was initially told to accept a reduced salary of €12,000-a-week before being sent a letter of termination.

“My lawyer will take care of the issue, we will go to FIFA, we will defend our rights,” Song told RMC.

“We played a friendly on March 20 and we were supposed to meet with the president on Monday and then on Tuesday we had no news.

“We received a WhatsApp message on Tuesday afternoon to tell us that everyone had to sign a document informing us that our wages were falling, that he was going to pay us around €12,000

“The next day, we received the dismissal document without explanation.

“I am a football player, it is not my job. There are people to verify that the document is valid, I can’t sign it, we had no discussion.

“All the clubs are talking about it now, our captain knew nothing. Together we decided not to sign the document, we had to talk.

“I did not commit any professional misconduct. All clubs talk to their players to find solutions, we don’t understand what happened, nobody can do it.”

Players across the world have accepted pay cuts in a bid to save money while football is in lockdown.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his Juventus team-mates will accept what amounts to a four-month reduction in their salary in a bid to save the Serie A leaders €100m.

The likelihood of any major European league resuming before June is negligible with Euro 2020 having already been postponed by 12 months.
