Ford V Ferrari Wins the Weekend Box Office with $31 Million

Ford V Ferrari easily won this weekend’s box office with a $31 million debut. Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels reboot ended up bombing in its premiere weekend with only $8.6 million. James Mangold’s latest movie, which stars Christian Bale and Matt Damon, earned a rare A+ rating from CinemaScore and is a much-needed hit for Fox and its new bosses at Disney. Ford v Ferrari has some pretty big Oscars aspirations and it’s beginning to look like it could take home some awards early next year.

Midway celebrated its second weekend in theaters by taking the second position after earning $8.7 million. The historical war drama is based on the attack at Pearl Harbor and the subsequent Battle of Midway during World War II. Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels opened at number three after only bringing in $8.6 million. The reboot was expected to do better than it did, but was not able to capture its target market of younger females. This does not bode well for a planned franchise.

Playing with Fire came in at number four at the box office this weekend after earning $8.5 million. The comedy stars John Cena, Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo, Brianna Hildebrand, Dennis Haysbert, and Judy Greer. Last Christmas took the fifth spot after brining in $6.7 million. The holiday romantic comedy stars Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke and has not been getting the best reviews. However, it has managed to earn over $35 million globally since opening last weekend.

Doctor Sleep was able to take the sixth spot this weekend after bringing in $6.1 million. The horror sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining has been receiving praise from Stephen King fans and critics, though it hasn’t been the box office success that many were hoping for. The Good Liar debuted at number seven after earning $5.65 million. The movie is directed by Bill Condon and stars Ian McKellen as a conman who targets a wealthy widow played by Hellen Mirren.

Todd Phillips’s Joker fell to number eight this weekend with $5.63 million. The director celebrated the movie crossing the $1 billion global threshold earlier this week by thanking fans for going out to see the unorthodox take The Clown Prince of Crime’s origin story. Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil took the ninth spot after earning $5.2 million and has not been the box office success the studio had initially hoped for. And finally, Harriet rounds out the top ten with $4.7 million. You can check out the rest of this weekend’s numbers over at Box Office Mojo.
