Football club accidentally names stand after Rose West


A football club has inadvertently rebranded a stand using the name of Rose West, the serial killer. After Southend United secured sponsorship from Gilbert & Rose, a local estate agency, it named the west stand at its Roots Hall ground the “Gilbert & Rose West Stand”. Although the club initially declined to change the name, it has now announced that it is talking to the sponsor about a “different arrangement of words”, the BBC reported.

Supermarket seeking beer taster

Aldi is advertising for an official beer taster, the Daily Star reported. The supermarket giant said the successful applicant will “have a passion for beer and pints of enthusiasm” and will help “guide and inform bosses ahead of key decision making”. Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said that for beer lovers “this is the ultimate opportunity”. However, for some that dream may be tarnished by the fact it is an unpaid role.

Elderly man survives ‘impossible’ drama

A 62-year-old man survived for 16 hours in an air bubble inside his capsized sailboat in the Atlantic Ocean before being rescued by Spanish coast guard divers. A diver was winched onto the ship’s hull to seek signs of life and the man inside responded to his banging on the hull by knocking from inside. The rescue team have described the operation as “verging on the impossible”, CNN reported. The Frenchman, who has not been named, was airlifted to safety and taken to hospital for checks.
