Flights: This is the most annoying thing you can do on a plane – and Britons are the worst

Flights involve a fair bit of stress and the behaviour of other plane passengers can be infuriating for travellers. New research has looked into the pet peeves of flyers – and which nationality is the most annoying. The study by the team at Jetcost was part of an ongoing study into the travelling habits of Americans. The bad news for anyone from the UK is that Britons were named as the most annoying international passengers to travel with by those from the USA.

Nineteen per cent of Americans quizzed said that British people were the most frustrating on a plane.

Second most annoying were travellers from France and third most irritating were Australians.

The most aggravating habit of all on a plane was revealed to be leaning back in a plane seat.

A whopping 76 per cent agreed this was the most annoying trait in a fellow plane passenger.

Fifty per cent of respondents said that other flyers taking their shoes off was bad.

This has been reflected in numerous videos going viral of passengers being horrified at the bare feet antics of other travellers

Talking loudly was deemed the third most irritating trait of other passengers, as voted by 53 per cent.

Taking up too much room was elected by 31 per cent of those surveyed as the most annoying thing while kicking the back of the seat was voted as infuriating by 20 per cent.

It was found that almost three-quarters of Americans (73 per cent) felt that they became irritated more easily when they travel.

More than two thirds (68 per cent) said that they had blown a fuse whilst flying.

The behaviour of other passengers aside, the Americans were quizzed on what angered them the most during travelling.

The most common answers given were ‘running late’ (26 per cent), ‘getting lost’ (21 per cent) and ‘being delayed’ (19 per cent).

As part of the study, Americans were also asked which traits annoyed them most in the cabin crew.

These were found to be ‘not clearing away rubbish quick enough’ (22 per cent), ‘walking past when trying to ask for something’ (16 per cent) and ‘gossiping loudly’ (14 per cent).

Commenting on the findings of the study, a spokesperson for Jetcost said: “Flying – and travelling in general – can be a very stressful experience, so it’s no wonder that tensions run high and people can become aggravated over the smallest inconvenience.

“It was interesting to see which states were perceived to have the most annoying passengers, although this, of course, has no bearing on the people from the state itself!”

Passengers’ shocking plane etiquette is often shared by Instagram account passengershaming. One photo captured a woman who took her long black and grey hair and draped it over the back of the chair.

Consequently, the lengthy tresses hang right in front of the passengers sitting in the seats behind her. The ponytail trails so far down it seems to skim the back seat pocket where in-flight magazines are kept.

“If you don’t want it behind your head, what makes you think I want it in front of my face?!” one person posted. “How can you think that this is acceptable? Seriously!” another agreed.
