Flights: Passenger shocks onlookers with lewd choice of face mask – why did he do this?

Airlines around the world are now asking plane passengers to wear face masks or coverings in order to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) and other diseases. However, many flight operators, including easyJet, have said that passengers must provide their own face coverings to wear for the duration of the journey.

He is dressed in a baseball cap, t-shirt and shorts.

However, his nose and mouth are covered, not by a surgical mask like his fellow cabin mates, but by what appears to be a pair of women’s underwear.

The picture was shared with the caption: NEW RULES: We’re all gonna need to band together and cut this ‘oh, hey everyone look at me and how funny and original I am using lace women’s underwear as a mask’ … We’re all in this together, yo.”

Indeed, commenters on the post seem to be concerned at the man’s decision and are worried about the risk he could be causing.

“And they let him board? Yikes,” wrote one viewer.

Another added: “It is just, so not hard, to wear an actual mask in a crowded place!

“At the very least, it blocks odours from people that are close by. Mine hides my extra chins & jowls.

“It’s a win-win. This guy looks like a bratty child that refuses to follow the rules.”

A third wrote: “Not a mask, sorry you can’t enter the plane..bye, bye!”

Someone else pointed out that his mask could be deemed as offensive to those around him.

“Wait. Aren’t outfits deemed ‘offensive to other passengers’ banned on airlines?

“I’ve read about women having to change T-shirts with explicit sayings, etc. So wouldn’t ‘wearing women’s panties on your face’ fall into that category?” they questioned.

Others saw a brighter side to the man’s decision, finding humour in his move and even suggesting that the underwear just as effective as other choices of face covering.

“What’s the difference between underwear or a mask on someone’s face? Do you also have a problem with a bandana? How about the difference between a surgical mask and an N95 mask?” said one commenter.

Another said: “Sorry, don’t get the offence. The guidelines provide for making masks from cloth material. It also provides instructions on how to make one from clothing.

“The only concern that I would have with someone using panties is that they are new or clean. Other than that give it a rest.”

A third defended the man as trying to lighten spirits, saying: “Lighten up he’s trying to have fun with a horrible situation.”

One joker added: “Don’t get your panties in a bunch.”

Of course, while the man may have been looking for a laugh, his face covering is not the recommended type most airlines are asking passengers to utilise.

UK airlines, including easyJet, specify passengers should wear a “face mask”.

It is thought that airports may start to supply them from vending machines in terminals for travellers who do not arrive with masks in hand.

The easyJet website explains: “Masks should be worn by all passengers arriving at the airport.

“There may be dispensing machines for masks available at airports as well as hand sanitiser dispensing machines, but we strongly encourage everyone to arrive with a mask.

“Passengers will be required to provide their own masks.

“We will also stock additional masks onboard as a precautionary measure should a passenger find themselves without a fit for use mask, for example, if it breaks during the flight.”
