Flights: Never make this one easy mistake with food when flying or risk very big problem

Flights see a great number of plane passengers board an aircraft each with an idea of how they’ll pass their time onboard. Many travellers tuck into plane food and snacks provided by the airline or they’ve brought themselves. However, a travel expert has revealed how there’s one way globetrotters need to be careful which it comes to food when flying.

Kristiansen had packed snacks for the trip for her son.

As she went through immigration in Miami – after entering with her US passport – she suddenly remembered there was an orange in her bag.

“The immigration officer said it wasn’t an issue if I declared it on the form. So, I declared ‘one U.S.-grown orange’ on my form,” Kristiansen wrote.

However, the act of bringing the fruit into the US saw the mother and son detained by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for an hour.

DON’T MISS

Kristiansen explained how she repeatedly told officers that it was a mistake, that she’d been told to declare the orange and that se would throw it away

“We were released after several firm lectures from different officers about bringing foreign plants, seeds, fruit and vegetables into the United States. It seemed the scare was over,” she wrote.

However, the incident didn’t just stop there – it came back to haunt her in the future.

“A black mark of sorts had been placed against my name in the United States by the U.S. Food and Agriculture department,” Kristiansen elaborated.

“I was subjected to additional screenings of all of my luggage after immigration for the next nine months.”

Later, Kristiansen asked why she was repeatedly subjected to post-immigration screenings.

An immigration officer asked her if she’d ever smuggled fruit into the States – and the penny dropped.

“Lesson learned: if you bring food and veg on board for snacks, it cannot leave the plane. I now leave our entire snack bag on board just in case,” said the traveller.

Travellers should also remember what they should pack in their luggage to avoid problems.

“It might sound obvious but be prepared when you do your homework before you enter the airport or touchdown in a new city for the first time,” said Contactlenses.co.uk.

“Always make sure you have all of your booking details and boarding passes for the plane,” explained thenline retailer

“If you have applied for a visa, ensure you have the relevant documentation for this too so you’re not left in a tricky and embarrassing situation scrambling to ensure you have your ducks in a row!”
