Flights: Cabin crew attendant reveals simple top trick to avoid jet lag – and it’s so easy

Flights to long haul journeys can be effortlessly easy for some plane passengers, and a struggle for others. While frequent flyers may be more adept at bunking down and getting some sleep, or focussing on work to stay awake for the right amount of time, others may find it tricky. For those prone to jet lag, or need a little help adjusting to time differences, help is at hand. American Airlines’ Flight Attendant, Lauren Bamonte has shared her top tip for reducing the impact of time differences when travellers arrive at their intended destination.

She told Express.co.uk passengers should always land at bedtime in their final destination, and added: “When flying transatlantic, try to arrive at bedtime in the destination time zone so you can all go straight to bed and more quickly adjust to the new time zone.

“Set your watch to the time in your new destination as soon as you board to help you adjust.

“Hydration is key: To ensure you get a good rest onboard, limit your caffeine and alcohol consumption and instead stay hydrated with soft drinks.”

Lauren also advised travellers to select their seats carefully for the best chance of a good kip.

She added: “Choose your seats carefully. If you wish to remain undisturbed as much as possible choose the window seat.

“For avid photographers, the window seat also gives a great view of the skyline of your approaching destination.

“Before you go to sleep, remember to fasten the seatbelt over your blanket so the crew don’t have to wake you when the seatbelt sign is on.

“If you want to avoid sitting near young babies, choose seats away from partitions where bassinets could be positioned.”

Meanwhile a top packing hack for travellers embarking on a short duration yet long distance holiday has now come to light.

Holiday firm Thomas Cook has noted a substantial increase in “bite sized long haul breaks of less than a week”, meaning travellers perhaps need to plan more varied clothing in their single cabin bag, to save on pricey baggage costs.

Marie Ferriday has worked as cabin crew at Thomas Cook Airlines, based at Manchester Airport, for 12 years, and is more than familiar with tight luggage restrictions.

Marie spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about her tips for travelling smart with hand luggage when going on a short break, and revealed a top airport tip for holidaymakers to consider.

She warned against filling cabin luggage with bottles of cosmetics and toiletries and instead opting for sharing and common sense.

She said: “Buy your toiletries at the airport and save your liquid space for necessary makeup and your favourite fragrance.

“If travelling with friends you could buy toiletries together as they’ll all get used.

“You don’t all need to bring your hair straighteners and you can swap outfits too.”
