Flights: Britons reveal the 'grossest’ things they have seen on flights – do you agree?

Flights are often an opportunity to sit back and relax on the way to a destination. However, the difference between a comfortable flight and a bad one can be down to the people who are sharing the cabin with you. A survey by holiday provider Broadway Travel has revealed the top pet peeves for British travellers, with one action coming out on top.

The “grossest” thing a passenger can do is reportedly “putting feet on the back of the chair in front of the bulkhead.”

In fact, it seems feet largely rule the list, with six of the eight indecent actions focussing on this body part.

Passengers were also shamed for removing their shoes, removing their shoes and socks, going to the bathroom barefoot or going to the bathroom in just their socks.

Meanwhile, travellers also shudder at the thought of clipping nails – be that finger or toenails- when in the sky.

This was followed by the sound of screaming babies and loud children, with 38 percent claiming that this annoyed them the most when flying.

In third place was drunk passengers, in fourth was smelly passengers, and, in joint fifth place, was rowdy stag/hen parties and seat recliners.

Other behaviours that were shamed include travellers who take up the legroom space by “spreading their legs”, passengers “taking up all the overhead bin space, and having to stand up to allow their fellow seatmates to use the toilet.

Broadway Travel’s Jill Mitchell, Chief Operating Officer said: “With limited space on planes we are closer to strangers than we would be in most other situations, and as much as these bugbears are annoying, it’s become part of the experience.

“As a frequent flyer, nothing beats that pre-holiday excitement, even if it means enduring bad travel etiquette along the way.”

Indeed, passengers are frequently sharing their own bad passenger experiences online.

Recently, one traveller was left shocked by another’s “rude” behaviour.

The passenger shared a snap online of the moment a man in front of him reclined his seat the entire way back, taking up all of the leg space.

The Reddit user who took the photograph explained: “I’m 6’5” and this guy just slammed his seat back on the tarmac, a few seconds before take-off. When I said “ow” he turned back and asked, “are we going to have a problem?”

“I said “well actually, I’m 6’5” and you just hurt my legs. Common courtesy would have been to at least turn around see who’s behind you. If you’d insisted anyway of leaning back, I’d have at least have tried to move my legs.”

“If you don’t like it, you should have bought a first-class ticket.”

Viewers of the viral image were gobsmacked, calling for “revenge” on the lounging gent.

One commented: “I would have come down with the biggest, wettest case of the allergies ever. Sneezed ALL over the top of his head.”
