A FLIGHT attendant has revealed the secret trap door that they use in an emergency to escape – and you have probably seen it before without realising.
The crew member, who works for Virgin Australia, revealed the hidden door during a live Q&A on Instagram.
In the video, he explained where it is, and how it worked.
The unnamed male flight attendant explained: “As every aircraft [does], you have to have an emergency exit so if an event did happen up here, we have our emergency escape hatch up here.”
He then demonstrates where it is in the cabin crew area where they sleep during long-haul flights.
Under the bunk is a middle section which can be opened up when the bedding is taken off.
The middle part opens up and folds back before sliding down to open into the economy cabin where crew can then escape.
He continued: “And now you will see, it goes down into the economy cabin.”
“So if you’ve ever wondered, in economy cabin when there is an overhead locker without a handle, that is why.
The cockpit also has a secret hatch which pilots use in the event of an emergency to get off the plane, according to one Quora user.
The exit route is out of the ceiling of the plane, which lets the captains escape without having to go out through the cabin emergency exits.
This allows them to get out of the main cockpit door is compromised, as well as to avoid more people using the front emergency exit.
The Virgin Australia flight attendant also answered other questions in the Instagram Q&A, including whether passengers were allowed into the cabin sleeping – telling them no, they are not.
Qantas crew previously revealed the hidden parts of the plane for crew, from where they sleep to where they relax.
We’ve also revealed where pilots sleep with many of the beds being next to the cockpit, above first class.
There is also a seat dubbed the William Shatner seat, which has the best view of the wing.
