Fleabag was the big winner at last night’s Royal Television Society Awards, taking home the gongs for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Writer for scribe and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Let’s just the say the atmosphere in the awards would have been unique too, since there were no audience or even guests in attendance, thanks to coronavirus.
It was announced last Tuesday that the awards, held at the Grosvenor Hotel in London, would instead be live-streamed due to the growing nature of the pandemic.
But never mind the outbreak of a virus, because Fleabag’s almost perfect second series has won yet another prestigious award – this sort of feels like we’re back in the real world again.
Commenting on the win, the RTS said the show was ‘beautifully accomplished, supremely well written and performed.’
Phoebe herself was singled out by the judges, who described her as ‘truly stand-out performance in a brilliantly funny series.’
They added: ‘She confidently commits to the character despite the craziness of the world she inhabits.’

There were, of course, a host of other winners at the awards too, Fleabag aside.
Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa picked up the award for Best Male Comedic Performance for his role as Eric, while Derry Girls’ Saoirse-Monica Jackson picked up the same award for a female performance for her role as Erin.
Elsewhere, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK was awarded Best Entertainment Show, the Suranne Jones-starring Gentleman Jack won Best Drama Series and Channel 5 was awarded RTS Channel of the Year.
