‘Fleabag’ One-Woman Show Headed to Movie Theaters

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag has been a runaway success, first as a one-woman show by the British writer and actress and then as an acclaimed, Emmy-nominated TV series. Now, the stage version of Fleabag is headed to movie theaters.

On September 12th, Fleabag fans will get the chance to see a live broadcast version of Waller-Bridge’s performance at Wyndam’s Theatre in London on the big screen. National Theatre Live, the company behind the broadcast, will also host encore screenings in select theaters.

Waller-Bridge, who is also the creator of the BBC series Killing Eve, debuted the one-woman Fleabag show Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013 and instantly drew critical attention. The plot of the stage play closely follows that of the series, depicting a young, self-obsessed woman grappling with grief and guilt in the wake of her best friend’s death. Waller-Bridge has been doing encore performances of the one-woman show following the success of the TV series, but her stints in New York and London have been sold out for months. She will play her final performance as Fleabag in London on September 14th.

Fleabag ran for two seasons on Amazon Prime, and Waller-Bridge has stated that she has no plans to continue it. Season 2 earned three Emmy nominations this year, including for Outstanding Comedy Series. Waller-Bridge recently announced plans to publish a Fleabag book, containing the scripts for seasons 1 and 2.

On October 5th, Waller-Bridge will make her debut as the host of Saturday Night Live, featuring musical guest Taylor Swift.
