Disney-Pixar has released the first teaser trailer for the new film Onward, which will mark the studio’s first non-sequel release in nearly three years when it hits theaters next spring. Directed by Monsters University filmmaker Dan Scanlon, the original story takes place in a suburban fantasy world and revolves around two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out in the world. For Scanlon, this story was inspired by his relationship with his own brother, and the film reunites him with Monsters University producer Kori Rae.

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt lead the voice cast as the two brothers, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus providing the voice of their mother. Octavia Spencer also stars, and more voice cast is expected to be announced at a later date.

This teaser trailer doesn’t so much tease the story of the film as much as the world of the film, which of course is what all the best Pixar teaser trailers do. And the world here looks rich and full of potential. It’s a little hard to get a handle on the tone with this brief first look, but it appears that it could be something like an 80s road trip buddy movie set in a fantasy world. I love the imagination on display of what would happen if a fantasy realm turned suburban, complete with trash-eating unicorns, and Pratt and Holland obviously already have a rapport from the Avengers movies. Monsters University boasted a solid mix of comedy and heart, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what Scanlon has put together with this wholly original story.

Check out the Onward trailer below, followed by the movie’s first poster. The film opens in theaters on March 6, 2020.
