First Still Game Final Farewell review as Jack and Victor go out with a bang after 21 years

The longest and funniest farewell in Scottish showbiz history kicked off last night – and the good news for fans is that Still Game is going out with a bang.

After 21 years as Jack and Victor, it was the beginning of the end for Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill’s beloved characters as the last ever Still Game live show premiered at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

And a sold-out crowd lapped up every gag, every put down and every twist of some of the funniest Still Game scenes ever.

As the atmosphere built inside the Hydro, the excited crowd were getting in the spirit with Jack and Victor ‘taches, and a nod to the pair’s earlier work greeted fans, as they were asked to “Gonnae no dae that” when it came to taking pictures and videos.

Nobody had to ask “how” either.

The show takes up from where the much-loved sitcom gracefully concluded earlier this year, as we saw Jack and Victor fade away as they walked up into the hills.

They were slowly followed by rest of the gang Isa (Jane McCarry), Tam (Mark Cox), Winston (Paul Riley), Navid (Sanjeev Kohli) and Boaby (Gavin Mitchell).

It’s impossible to reveal much more about the plot without spoiling the stor.

But Ford and Greg have gone all out to make this the farewell that fans had been looking forward to ever since the decision to wrap up was announced.

And they certainly succeeded, with hilarious dialogue and sparky one-liners which are among the lads’ best work, with the crowd howling throughout.

It’s as a crotchety ensemble that the cast shines and they were all on top form but special credit to Gavin Mitchell and Mark Cox for their great performance in a pivotal part of the story.

There are some cracking musical numbers, some harking back to the act’s very early days, while the fourth wall breaking style of previous shows is used to great effect, heightening the mood of a celebratory farewell.

And the pre-show promise of some of the best of Chewin’ the Fat was well delivered – they also work best as surprises – and there are nostalgic call backs to classic Still Game gags down the years, with guest turns from more than a few old faces getting a rapturous welcome.

One in particular absolutely brought the house down, with some lines so hilarious even the cast struggled to keep it together at times.

Even Navid’s usually off-screen or stage wife Meena (Shamshad Akhtar) got a look in, as the night turned into a properly moving leaving party.

They even took time to laugh at themselves, with some brilliant self referential jokes that the pickiest of the stars’ Twitter followers will appreciate.

As befits a proper going away party, there were tears of sadness and farewell but in classic Craiglang style, you’re never more than a few beats away from a killer put-down.
