First Sonic The Hedgehog trailer arrives

So the official trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog has arrived and, erm… Well, we’ll let you watch for yourself.

Sonic is obviously a videogame veteran who’s been running round collecting gold rings ever since his debut on Sega’s Mega Drive way back in 1991, but this is our first proper look at the spiky speedster’s first big-screen outing.

A live-action adventure featuring an all-CG critter as its main character (a la the upcoming Detective Pikachu), the film follows the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog (voiced by Parks And Recreation‘s Ben Schwartz) as he joins up with newfound human pal Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to evade the clutches of the villainous Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who wants to use Sonic’s powers for – you guessed it – world domination.

You can watch the trailer below…

This trailer is notable for offering our first look at the movie version of Sonic, who’s up to now only been glimpsed via industry promo leaks (thankfully, his legs are a bit less creepily human and bodybuilder-like than had previously been suggested, but what’s with those teeth?!).

What really stands out here though is an astonishingly bizzare-looking performance from Carrey as Robotnik, Sonic’s long-time arch-nemesis (seriously, scenery-chewing doesn’t quite cover it). It’s a bold choice, to be sure – this is the actor’s first major role in a mainstream Hollywood movie since 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To, and it’s certainly likely to get people talking.

Sonic The Hedgehog will be racing into UK cinemas on 26 December 2019.
