First Dates contestant angers nation as he checks football scores mid-meal before branding date a ‘6.5’

First Dates viewers were left in shock when a ‘rude’ contestant whipped his phone out to check the football score – before branding his date a ‘6.5’.

It all seemed to be going swimmingly between the potential lovebirds as they bonded over their love of food, with chef Lee revealing what he would cook for Becky if given the opportunity.

However, things took a turn when the 36-year-old then interrupted the date to ask waiter Grant Urquhart to keep him posted about the football score.

Because Manchester United’s game is apparently more important than potentially finding love…

An understandably confused Becky asked: ‘What are you talking about?’

‘I’m football crazy,’ he responded. ‘United kicked off literally when our date started.’

The mum-of-two very kindly allowed him to take his phone out and check himself, looking a little bemused when he took her up on the offer.

Ben later asked the Grant for another update, with the waiter hitting back: ‘You’re on a date, you don’t need the football, you’ve got a pretty lady in front of you.’

Maybe Becky should go for Grant, instead…

But clearly the football fan was desperate to know how his precious football team were doing, and popped outside ‘for a cigarette’, but spent most of the time on the phone to a pal, asking if they ‘were still losing’, before branding the team ‘f***ing s***’, and his date a ‘6.5’.

Maybe if you didn’t whip your phone out at every given opportunity…

But he saved the worst for last, telling Grant he ‘didn’t fancy’ Becky – while she raving about all the sparks she was feeling.

When asked what he normally went for, he told the waiter: ‘Bit taller, bit slimmer.’

And viewers at home were left in complete shock by the whole thing.

‘Did he just get his phone out to look at the footie…. oooooo her face. Come on mate. Shes lovely,’ one posted.

‘Oh dear, bad manners in force on @Channel4 #FirstDates – how many times does a bloke need to check his phone for the football score?!#FirstDates,’ another commented.

While a third added: ‘Lee is a complete and utter t***. Becky is stunning and deserves better than that arrogant idiot #FirstDates.’

Thankfully, despite things not working out with Lee, Becky will be on next week’s episode in another bid to look for love.

Maybe just steer clear of the ‘football crazy’ fans…

First Dates continues on Tuesdays, at 10pm, on Channel 4.
