Revealing she is now free of the disease, the former GMTV host, 59, said she fell ill on 20 March and suffered symptoms including severe fatigue, a ‘fiery throat’ and difficulty breathing.

Being left bed-ridden for days, with her husband forced to take leave from work for fear of being asymptomatic and passing on the virus, Fiona detailed her battle.

Writing in the Mirror, she said: ‘All I can say is I felt as though I’d been clobbered in my sleep.

‘However hard I tried to get myself out of bed and on with the day ahead, something was holding me back.’

She continued of her symptoms: ‘I’d had horrible gut pain for a few days.

‘My whole digestive tract was making a pain of itself, demanding attention and really dragging me down.’

The presenter was in bed three days after she first became ill and her husband – This Morning boss Martin Frizell – had to stay home from work to avoid the risk of infecting his ITV colleagues.

Hearing the deaths that were occurring due to the disease left Fiona ‘scared’ as she wrote: ‘But my breathing, although sometimes shallow, never failed. The thought that it might was terrifying.

‘And the more I thought about that, the shallower my breath seemed to become. So I concentrated on positive things.’

The TV presenter confirmed she was now feeling better, though still tired, adding her thoughts were with those still fighting the disease

Last month Fiona revealed she’d come down with coronavirus symptoms, as she wrote on Twitter: ‘Am in bed with #coronvirusuk It’s not a very pleasant bedfellow, but nothing more than sore throat, dry cough, headache & tiredness. As long as it stays that way….DON’T panic!’

When asked by a follower how she’d managed to be tested, seeing as so many people have been denied such a thing due to a shortage, the presenter replied: ‘No, no,no! I used 111 for information as to my symptoms. Goodness knows how people get tests…’
