Final Platinum 4 game reveal is an April Fool joke about Terra Cresta

The final new game reveal in the Platinum 4 series of revelations isn’t actually a new game, just a weak April’s Fool Day prank.

Over the years, the Internet has turned April Fool’s Day into a nightmare of misinformation and hopelessly unfunny jokes, such that it’s hard to believe almost anything you read today.

We’re especially unsure as to what to make of PlatinumGames’ final new announcement, as while they’ve admitted it’s an April Fool that seems to mean that the Platinum 4 was only ever three announcements.

The ‘joke’ is that Platinum are making a sequel to 1985 coin-op Terra Cresta, called Sol Cresta. The original was a now largely forgotten vertically scrolling shooter, similar to Xevious, and the video above implies Platinum are going to release the new game as an actual arcade cabinet – except of course they’re not.

We’re really not sure what this is all in aid of but given Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya’s love of old school 2D shooters, and his famously odd sense of humour, we’re guessing this was probably all his idea.

Terra Cresta, plus predecessor Moon Cresta and a couple of console-only sequels, where originally made by the now defunct Nichibutsu. The rights are now owned by Hamster Corporation, who are best known for the Arcade Archives series of emulated coin-ops.

They’re referenced in the video, so Platinum obviously had some kind of conversation with them, but the main Platinum 4 website clearly refers to the whole thing as an April Fool and we don’t think there’s any real intention to make a game.

That means the whole Platinum 4 concept ended up being a bit overblown, as of the three other announcements one was just a new studio and one is a remaster of The Wonderful 101.

Project G. G. does sounds great though and we’re definitely looking forwards to that, but we’re not sure getting fans all excited like this, expecting major new announcements, was a very sensible idea.

Unless the real April Fool is a proper announcement tomorrow, but there’s no indication of that at the moment.
