Following on from the state’s unhealthy lead, West Virginia placed second and Kentucky came in third, a study by WalletHub found.

They used 29 key metrics to analyse the data, which included “sugar beverage consumption” and each state’s favourite “comfort food”.

More than seven in 10 US adults aged 20 and older are either overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Children’s rates were lower but have risen over the past few decades.

OBESITY: THE MULTIMILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY

America’s battle to beat the bulge has seen the weight loss and diet control industry valued at $72million (£55m), last year.

The nation spends a total of $200billion ($155bn) on health care costs related to obesity.

Both Mississippi and West Virginia featured in the top five of all their major tests, which contributed to their final score.

These included high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – all of which can be linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices.

The study, which also looked into the state’s favourite comfort food, found that Mississippi’s was mud pie, with 510 calories per serving.

West Virginia’s was the pepperoni roll with 250 calories per serving.

Another study found that obesity affects nearly 40 per cent of the population in some states.

Following on from the top three “fattest” states in America was: Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Delaware and Ohio.

The least “fattest” state in the US was Utah, followed by Colorado and Massachusetts.
