‘Fantastic Four’ director attacks Marvel on Twitter

After years and years of anticipation, The Irishman finally hit Netflix this week, and was immediately devoured by its millions and millions of subscribers.

One moviegoer who quickly clicked play on Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic was director Josh Trank. The Chronicle and Fantastic Four filmmaker took to Twitter while watching The Irishman to praise it.

However, you won’t be able to read Trank’s online thoughts on The Irishman, though. That’s because Trank had to delete the tweet as he also used it to criticise the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which provoked quite a lot of uproar from its fans.

Trank originally wrote, via ComicBook.com, “Watching the Irishman. The first 5 minutes have more humanity and truth and cinematic intrigue than the running length of every single Marvel movie combined ahahahahahahahaha. Sorry, facts. PS: Not sorry.”

This isn’t the first time in recent days that Trank’s online actions have caused quite a stir. Trank took to Letterboxd to review Fantastic Four, his heavily maligned 2015 attempt to reboot the beloved Marvel comic, which scored just 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trank gave Fantastic Four 2/4, writing, “The movie is ALRIGHT. I was expecting it to be much worse than it was.”

When it came to the quality of the finished movie, Trank wrote, “There are TWO different movies in one movie competing to be that movie,” before explaining, “I was 29 years old, making my 2nd film, in a situation more complicated than anything a 2nd time filmmaker should’ve walked into. That said… I don’t regret any of it. It’s a part of me.”

Fonzo, Trank’s follow-up to Fantastic Four, which sees Tom Hardy playing Al Capone, will hopefully be released at some point in 2020, especially since it was actually filmed back in 2018.
