The loyal conservative MP pointed the finger firmly at the Government for the rise of the former Ukip leader back into mainstream politics. Mr Fabricant stated Britons could flock to Mr Farage’s grassroots party as a “protest against the failure to deliver March 29” – which had been the original day to deliver on the vote of the 17.4 million people who voted to leave the European Union. The Tory backbencher confirmed he would still campaign for the Tory party before Britons go to the polling station on May 23.
However he insisted the vote will be seen by many as a second referendum on EU membership, following the rise of the Brexit Party and Change UK to challenge the political establishment.
Mr Fabricant wrote on Twitter: “In the Euro Elections while I will support and campaign for the #Conservatives and our great MEPs, I can well understand why many will choose to vote for the Brexit Party as a protest against the failure to deliver March 29. Almost a 2nd Referendum/People’s Vote.”
Earlier today the Brexit Party officially kickstarted its election campaign in Cumbria and stated Britain has been “humiliated on the world stage” following the UK’s failure to deliver on the 2016 referendum.
John Stanyer, who led the Vote Leave campaign in the area said: “Our focus is entirely on getting the result of the referendum enacted.
“There is a feeling out there among the general public that the democratic vote has been overturned by politicians.”
Mr Stanyer who has been appointed chairman of the campaign in Cumbria, added: “About 55 per cent of people in Cumbria voted for Brexit and they are really annoyed.
“There’s also another group who actually voted remain but believe that the referendum result should be followed through.”
Mr Stanyer said nationally the party has gained more than 66,000 members in the past few weeks.
Meanwhile leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has hit out at Nigel Farage’s party and warned it increases the changes of a Jeremy Corbyn government and Brexit not being delivered.
The Chairman of the European Research Group (ERG) called of the Brexit Party which his sister Annunziata has joined to “reunite” with the Tory party or risk splitting the vote in an election.
Mr Rees-Mogg said: “I greatly respect Nigel Farage and I fully understand what my sister Annunziata is doing in supporting them but I don’t think it’s the right way to do it.
“If we get to a General Election with the votes split between the Conservative party and the Brexit Party, all that does is let Jeremy Corbyn in who doesn’t deliver Brexit at all because the Labour party is quite hostile to it.
“So what we need to do is ultimately reunite the Conservative party – but that’s a little way off at the moment.”
The European Parliament elections will be held between May 23 and 26 where a total of 751 MEPs will be chosen to represent the EU’s members states.
