Jurgen Klopp fielded a raw team but Liverpool were too good for Everton as they left the Toffees still searching for their first win this century at Anfield.
In a starting XI showing nine changes from the side that beat Sheffield United on Thursday, including debutants Takumi Minamino and Nathaniel Phillips, Klopp’s Reds were still too strong for a near full-strength Everton.
There was only one goal in the derby clash, but it was a stunner, as 18-year-old Curtis Jones beat Jordan Pickford with a brilliant curling effort from 25 yards.
“I can’t sum up my emotions,” said Jones. “For me it’s huge just being around this team every day and learning from this group of players.
“There are world-class players all over this team but I think I went out and showed what I could do on the pitch.”
Klopp described the goal, and its scorer, as “sensational”, adding: “They played brave football. Unbelievable individual performances from the kids.”
Rooney inspires Derby
Crystal Palace may be enjoying a decent run in the Premier League, lying ninth in the table, but the Eagles were brought down to earth at Selhurst Park yesterday by Championship side Derby County.
Chris Martin got the only goal of the game, while Palace captain Luka Milivojevic was sent off after an altercation with Derby’s Tom Huddlestone.
The visitors were buoyed by the presence of Wayne Rooney, his first appearance in the FA Cup since he played for Everton two years ago.
“He influenced the game a lot because you could see his experience,” Derby boss Phillip Cocu said of the former England captain.
“A big part of the success today is the combination between him and Tom Huddlestone – it was a pleasure to watch.”

Replays for Spurs and Man Utd
Tottenham will have to go again against Middlesbrough after they were held 1-1 by the Championship outfit at the Riverside Stadium.
Fielding a full-strength team, minus the injured Harry Kane, last season’s Champions League finalists went behind to a goal from Ashley Fletcher five minutes into the second half.
Lucas Moura levelled on the hour mark as he headed home Serge Aurier’s cross, and although both sides had chances to steal a winner in the final quarter it ended all-square.
“It’s a game we don’t need,” admitted Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, when asked about the replay. “Our squad is short with so many problems, but it’s a game at home and we have to go for it.”
Manchester United also face the unwanted addition of another fixture as they and Wolves played out a goalless draw at Molineux.
United have their two-leg Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City this month, and now they must host Wolves in their FA Cup replay, nothing less than they deserve after failing to register a shot on target in a domestic game for the first time since January 2015.
Holders City ease through
Phil Foden was the star of the show for Man City as the defending champions brushed aside Port Vale at the Etihad.
The youngster scored one and made another as the Sky Blues won 4-1 to book their place in this evening’s fourth-round draw.
Oleksandr Zinchenko, Sergio Aguero and 17-year-old Taylor Harwood-Bellis were the other scorers, while Port Vale’s goal came from Tom Pope.
In other notable results, Chelsea had Callum Hudson-Odoi to thank for their 2-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest, with the England winger scoring one and making the other.
Meanwhile AFC Fylde, the last non-league club in this season’s FA Cup, were beaten 2-1 by Premier League side Sheffield United, with Jordan Williams scoring their goal after Callum Robinson and Leon Clarke had put the Blades 2-0 up.
When is the fourth-round draw?
The draw for the fourth round will take place tonight from 7.35pm and is live on the FA Cup’s official Twitter account, BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
Arsenal’s third-round clash against Leeds (7.46pm, live on BBC One) will follow the draw.
Fourth-round matches will take place on the weekend of 24-27 January.
