FA Cup fourth round: team news and match previews

Northampton v Derby

Friday 8pm BT Sport 1 Venue Sixfields
Referee Darren England VAR No Odds H 10-3 A Evs D 11-4
Head-to-head Derby six wins, Northampton none; four draws

Keith Curle’s League Two side are unbeaten in six games and in the play-off hunt, and could make things awkward for a Derby team beset by off-field issues this season. The Cobblers are chasing their first fifth-round appearance since 1970, when they memorably lost 8-2 to Manchester United, with George Best scoring six goals. Another United legend will be on show as the TV cameras come to Sixfields, although Wayne Rooney may struggle to match that from central midfield. Niall McVeigh

QPR v Sheffield Wednesday

Friday 8pm BT Sport Extra Venue Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium
Referee Darren England VAR No Odds H 9-5 A 9-5 D 5-2
Head-to-head QPR 25 wins, Wednesday 30; 17 draws

QPR might be putting their dismal FA Cup record behind them; after going out at the first hurdle 15 times since the turn of the century, they’re one win from a second trip to the last 16 in succession. Garry Monk will want a reaction from his players after the 5-0 home defeat to Blackburn prompted a training-ground inquest last week. His team will have to marshall Jordan Hugill, who scored twice in Rangers’ 2-1 win at Hillsborough earlier this season. NMc

Brentford v Leicester

Saturday 12.45pm BBC One Venue Griffin Park
Referee Chris Kavanagh VAR No Odds H 3-1 A 10-11 D 5-2
Head-to-head Brentford six, Leicester 11; 10 draws

As an ambitious, well-run Championship club, promotion chasers Brentford might look at their Cup opponents as a model of where they’d like to be in five years’ time. Brendan Rodgers first full season in charge looks set to end in a top-four finish, with a League Cup final place also still on the cards. The FA Cup is probably third on their list of priorities, but his team will need to be up for the fight at a raucous Griffin Park. NMc

Burnley v Norwich

Saturday 3pm Venue Turf Moor
Referee Michael Oliver VAR Yes Odds H Evs A 3-1 D 5-2
Head-to-head Burnley 18, Norwich 14; seven draws

Burnley have played their way out of a tight spot in the past week. Victories over Leicester and Manchester United have pulled them up the table and they now sit level on points with Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Everton, and arguably in better form. Without that boost, the Cup might have been regarded as an unnecessary complication. Now, the visit of the Premier League’s bottom club invites dreams of the fifth round and beyond. Sean Dyche will probably rest a few players, but it is Norwich who could do with a break. Paul Wilson

Coventry v Birmingham

Saturday 3pm Venue St Andrew’s
Referee Tim Robinson VAR No Odds H 2-1 A 6-4 D 12-5
Head-to-head Coventry 17, Birmingham 23; 15 draws

The tenants meet the landlords. Birmingham will be the visitors in their own home on Saturday, with Coventry the designated home side for the tie. The Sky Blues have been playing at St Andrew’s recently as issues with the Ricoh Arena rumble on. It’s a sell out, with Coventry’s 10,500 allocation slightly larger than Birmingham’s. Blues fans will have the novelty of sitting in the away end as their team bids to reach the fifth round for the first time since 2012. Michael Butler

Millwall v Sheffield United

Saturday 3pm Venue The Den
Referee Anthony Taylor VAR No Odds H 5-2 A 7-5 D 12-5
Head-to-head Millwall 22, Sheff Utd 23; 10 draws

Chris Wilder made 11 alterations to Sheffield United’s starting eleven ahead of the third-round win against Flyde, but will not repeat such wholesale change here. With Premier League survival all but assured, Wilder feels free to have a tilt at FA Cup glory. “We want to go as far as possible,” he said. “But we have to get through an extremely difficult tie at Millwall. It’s a tough place.” With eight wins in 16 games under Gary Rowett’s management, the Londoners are eighth in the Championship. Much may hinge on Millwall’s own priorities, with Rowett’s men just two points off a play-off place. Louise Taylor

Newcastle v Oxford United

Saturday 3pm Venue St James’ Park
Referee Robert Jones VAR Yes Odds H 2-5 A 7-1 D 4-1
Head-to-head Newcastle six, Oxford seven; five draws

Newcastle are aming to reach the fifth round for the first time since 2006 – the year before Mike Ashley bought the club. Midfielder Nabil Bentaleb could make his debut, with Austrian winger Valentino Lazaro set to join Steve Bruce’s injury-ravaged side on loan this Friday. Karl Robinson’s League One promotion-chasers cannot be underestimated but, like Newcastle, harbour a lengthy casualty list. Should Bentaleb play it will be the former Tottenham player’s first appearance since last April. He has spent the season exiled from Schalke’s squad for “disciplinary reasons.” LT

Portsmouth v Barnsley

Saturday 3pm Venue Fratton Park
Referee Graham Scott VAR No Odds H 5-4 A 2-1 D 12-5
Head-to-head Barnsley 18, Portsmouth 21; 14 draws

It is 113 years since these two clubs last met in the FA Cup. Barnsley are in a Championship relegation battle and this week suspended centre-back Bambo Diaby amid an ongoing anti-doping investigation. This Cup clash might be a nice distraction from that, but Portsmouth are yet to lose at home in the league. Currently unbeaten in six matches in all competitions, Kenny Jackett’s hosts will be confident of a mini-upset. Will Unwin

Reading v Cardiff

Saturday 3pm Venue Madejski Stadium
Referee Marc Edwards VAR No Odds H 6-4 A 2-1 D 3-1
Head-to-head Reading 25, Cardiff 23; 21 draws

These two sides can boast just two wins in their last 10 outings between them, both coming in the third round, against lower league opposition. There are just two points and places between the teams in the Championship table, with neither fearing relegation or having much hope of promotion, so this should be a free hit for both. Sam Baldock could return to the Reading starting line-up after a late goal at Nottingham Forest earned a draw in midweek. WU

Southampton v Tottenham

Saturday 3pm Venue St Mary’s Stadium
Referee Peter Bankes VAR Yes Odds H 9-5 A 7-5 D 5-2
Head-to-head Southampton 39, Spurs 56; 30 draws

Southampton are short on numbers in defence, with Cédric Soares and Jannik Vestergaard ruled out after suffering injuries in the midweek win over Palace. Shane Long is also absent but Danny Ings came off the bench at Selhurst Park; perhaps a sign Ralph Hasenhüttl fancies a Cup run. This trophy is José Mourinho’s best chance of silverware this season, but his side lost meekly here on New Year’s Day, and rumours persist of discontent within the camp. With Harry Winks injured, January recruit Gedson Fernandes could get his first Spurs start. NMc

West Ham v West Brom

Saturday 3pm Venue London Stadium
Referee Stuart Attwell VAR Yes Odds H 5-6 A 3-1 D 13-5
Head-to-head West Ham 39, West Brom 40; 25 draws

For all the hype about Slaven Bilic’s return to the London Stadium, West Brom’s manager has greater concerns than the FA Cup. West Brom’s promotion push has lost a little momentum and the Championship frontrunners could make a host of changes, though they might still fancy their chances of pulling off a minor upset. West Ham’s Premier League survival is on the line and David Moyes will have an eye on Wednesday’s visit from Liverpool. Jacob Steinberg

Hull v Chelsea

Saturday 5.30pm BT Sport 1 Venue Kcom Stadium
Referee Craig Pawson VAR No Odds H 6-1 A 1-2 D 4-1
Head-to-head Hull four, Chelsea 33; 10 draws

Frank Lampard is taking the FA Cup seriously and is expected to field a relatively strong side against Championship mid-table side Hull, a team Lampard scored against three times in six appearances. Tammy Abraham is out with an ankle injury and Chelsea’s manager, who will start Willy Caballero in goal instead of the struggling Kepa Arrizabalaga, wants Michy Batshuayi to make his presence felt up front. Reece James and Christian Pulisic are also out for the visitors. Jacob Steinberg

Manchester City v Fulham

Sunday 1pm BBC One Venue Etihad Stadium
Referee Kevin Friend VAR Yes Odds H 1-8 A 28-1 D 4-1
Head-to-head Man City 33, Fulham 17; 16 draws

Aymeric Laporte’s return in the midweek win at Sheffield United was a welcome boost as the business end of the season is entered. With City’s title defence all but over, retaining the Cup has increased allure. Fulham last beat City 11 years ago – the second of two consecutive Premier League wins at the Etihad – so knocking the holders out in front of the BBC cameras would be a shock of extra value. Tranmere v Manchester United

Sunday 3pm BT Sport 1 Venue Prenton Park
Referee Lee Mason VAR No Odds H 7-1 A 2-5 D 7-2
Previous meeting United 5-0 Tranmere (League Cup, 1976)

Manchester United’s visit to Prenton Park ticks almost every “traditional FA Cup tie” box: worn pitch, lower-division strugglers up for a scrap and with a scalp under their belt, out-of-form big club looking vulnerable, sell-out crowd. This feels like a tie that matters. Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s United may have other fish to fry but they cannot afford to slip up here, for morale’s sake alone. Already hampered by injuries, Solskjær is likely to field a reasonably strong side against Mickey Mellon’s hosts, who will be buoyed – if exhausted – by Thursday’s toppling of Watford. Tom Davies

Shrewsbury v Liverpool

Sunday 7pm BBC One Venue New Meadow
Referee Andre Marriner VAR No Odds H 13-2 A 4-9 D 4-1
Previous meeting Shrewsbury 0-4 Liverpool (1996)

A side consisting of fringe and academy players was sufficient to see off Everton’s first team in the third round, and Jürgen Klopp is expected to keep faith with many of those youngsters, while allowing the likes of Fabinho and Dejan Lovren some post-injury game time. Sam Ricketts’s team are 16th in League One and have won only once in their last seven games – the third-round replay against Bristol City. They showed Cup pedigree last season too, taking a two-goal lead at home to Wolves before eventually losing in a fourth-round replay. Andy Hunter

Bournemouth v Arsenal

Monday 8pm BT Sport 1 Venue Vitality Stadium
Referee Martin Atkinson VAR Yes Odds H 3-1 A 5-1 D 4-5
Head-to-head Bournemouth one, Arsenal eight; two draws

Monday night’s televised game offers a chance for both teams to build momentum after positive Premier League displays. Eddie Howe is chasing the kind of statement win that has been lacking this season, while Mikel Arteta will need no reminding of the years when the Cup came to Arsenal’s rescue. Even lifting the trophy would not heal the wounds should Bournemouth go down, or Arsenal stay mired in mid-table. That said, the value of a victory shouldn’t be underestimated – both teams have only managed six league wins each all season. Niall McVeigh NMc
