Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party topped our snap poll of Express.co.uk readers, which ran from 4.42pm to 7.42pm today. In three hours, 13,998 online readers had their say when asked: “Who would you vote for in a General Election?” In yet another boost to Mr Farage, 83 percent of respondents (11,479) said they would back his booming Brexit Party if a Genera Election is called. In a distant second place was the Lib Dems, who like the Brexit Party enjoyed a successful European elections campaign. They secured 7 percent (928) of Express.co.uk poll respondents.
The Tories received 5 percent (630), Labour 3 percent (364), the Green Party 1 percent (136) and the SNP also 1 percent (116).
Mr Farage’s former party Ukip received less than 1 percent of the vote (109), as did ‘Other’ (35), ‘Don’t Know’ (104) and ‘Won’t Vote’ (97).
Comments left by supporters gave an insight into the state of political chaos the UK is currently embroiled in and the anger of Brexit voters combined.
One voter said: “It’s a no brainer, The Brexit Party is going to walk it. People have had enough of self serving Europhile MPs, it’s time the swamp was drained and filled in with concrete.”
Another said: “Vote for democracy so Brexit Party.”
A third voter that took part in the poll made reference to Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit delay that saw her scrap the original March 29 deadline.
This deadline was replaced by April 12 and finally, much to the outrage of Leave supporters, Halloween this year.
The comment read: “Conservatives are gone, finished on the 29th of March.”
The poll comes after Mr Farage expressed his anger at claims the Brexit Party option was placed in the ‘other’ box as part of a shock YouGov poll that showed the Lib Dems would win a general election at this point in time.
The survey revealed the Brexit Party to be just two percent behind the Lib Dems regardless.
Mr Farage said on Twitter his party had been disadvantaged by being “hidden” in the poll, and not having what the pollster refers to as a “prompt”.
He said: “YouGov have released a poll showing the Lib Dems top in the country, with @brexitparty_uk second.
“They did not have the BP option on the list and we were hidden in ‘others’. Looks like an establishment attempt to suppress the truth.”
In a statement, research director Anthony Wells said the pollster takes the approach of “prompting” for main parties and offering smaller parties if people choose ‘other’.
He said: “This may seem unfair to some people (and has often been a source of complaint from supporters of smaller parties), but is based on what actually gets elections right.
“In the past, prompting for smaller parties has tended to overstate their support when compared to actual elections, and the two-stage approach to prompting has produced more accurate results.
“However, there comes a point when a small party becomes a big party, when they should be included in the main prompt.”
He added: “This can be a difficult decision, and one that YouGov takes time and care to call correctly, thoroughly testing any changes before they go ahead.”
The YouGov poll was conducted for The Times with 1,763 people surveyed from May 28-29.
