A COIN expert has explained the exact date you need to look out for on a rare 2p that could pocket you around £1,000.

The collector shared a video on social media to explain why this coin is valuable and how you can spot it in your spare change.

In the clip, published by the coincollectingwizard on TikTok, he showed images of the rare coin to help you keep an eye out for it.

He explained that design of this coin was changed from “New Pence” to “Two Pence” in 1982.

However, the following year a mistake was made during production of a small number of coins.

These coins were struck with the old inscription “New Pence” instead of the new design “Two Pence”, the collector said in the video.

This means that some coins with the design mistake began circulating as part of commemorative sets and they’re now selling for up to £1,000 on eBay.

When checking your spare change, you need to look out for the 1983 date, and if it says “New Pence” on the reverse instead of “Two Pence”, it means you have found it.

The expert said on TikTok: “After the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins.

“These coins were actually struck with the old inscription New Pence.

“So what you are looking for is any 1983 2p coins and if it says New Pence on the reverse instead of the words Two Pence, then you have found.”

He added: “If you’re lucky enough to find a 1983 New Pence 2p in your change, then it is worth around £1,000.”

But the content creator warned other collectors that they’re more likely to find the coin in the 1983 Royal Mint set, as that’s where the mistake was made.

He said: “These have been found and were at one point around £400, so it looks like this coin is rising in value.”

The video was published four days ago but has already been seen by over 35,000 people.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the rare coin in the comment section, with some claiming they might have it.

One wrote: “Think I have one.”

Another said: “I probably have loads cus my house has like jars and tubs full of 2ps and 1ps.”

Someone else added: “I have a 2p new pence but 1979.”

These coins, which were part of Royal Mint sets, are especially valuable as they won’t have the scratches and blemishes of circulation coins.

Earlier this yer, Kimberly Day from The Britannia Coin Company said: “Coin specialists call scarce coins like this ‘mules’ because they were made with mismatched designs, like a mule, which is the offspring of a horse and a donkey.

“1983 ‘New Pence’ 2p coins were produced with the wrong tails side, which should say ‘TWO PENCE’.

“Most 1983 2p coins do say ‘TWO PENCE’, but a small number have the sought-after ‘NEW PENCE’ wording.

“Mistakes on modern UK coins happen very infrequently, and errors like this are sought-after by serious collectors.”

Individual 1983 2ps have previously sold between £500 and £700, but some collectors pay up to £1,000 to get the rare coin.

Bear in mind though, a coin is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay and you might not always get hundreds or thousands of pounds for it.

What are the most rare and valuable coins?

It comes after an ultra-rare 50p coin featuring horizontal lines sold for whopping £700.

In celebration of the 2012 London Olympic Games, a set of 29 decorative 50 pence pieces were issued by The Royal Mint.

The coins came into circulation in 2011 and each represent a different Olympic sport.

Boxing is one of them and Team GB won a total of three gold medals in the event at London 2012, one of which belongs to Nicola Adams the first-ever female champion.

One coin seller decided to put their Olympic 50p Boxing Coin on eBay for £700 – and somehow it sold for that amount.

The coin features a pair of boxing gloves crossed over each other inside a boxing ring with horizontal lines.

The coin sold for that amount after one bid in July.

We also reported that a rare 25p coin, which is the same shape as a 20p so could easily be mistaken for the common silver piece, could actually be worth hundreds of pounds.

The 25p coin has a shield on one side and the Sovereign’s Orb on the other.

It was made by the Royal Mint but at the time, authorities had not decided whether the new coin would be worth 20p or 25p.

Coin experts call experimental coins like this one a “trial piece” or a “pattern coin”.

“Experimental coin” and “Royal Mint trial” are printed onto the coin.
