Ex-Manchester United fans' favourite Diego Forlan retires from football

Former Manchester United, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid star Diego Forlan has announced his retirement from football following a 21-year career in which he won the Premier League and Europa League.

Forlan became adored by United supporters when he scored twice at Anfield to help his side to a 2-1 victory against Liverpool in 2002.

Although his record of 17 goals in four seasons at Old Trafford isn’t particularly impressive, he is still sang about by United fans, and it seen as something of a cult hero.

His most recent side was Hong Kong team Kitchee, but after making just seven appearances in the Hong Kong Premier League Forlan clearly felt the time was right to call it a day.

Speaking to Telemundo about his decision, Forlan said: “It hasn’t been easy, I didn’t want the time to come, but I knew it was going to come. I have decided to stop playing football professionally.”

United sent a tweet from their official account following the announcement, saying: “All the best in your retirement Diego Forlan and thanks for the memories.”

Fans also showed their appreciation, with one saying “Happy retirement legend”, and another adding “MUFC club legend.”

His old forward partner Luis Suarez also praised the 40-year-old, saying: “Historic for Uruguayan football. Grateful for all the unforgettable moments you made all Uruguayans live, both in the national team and in all the teams you played.”

It is not clear whether Forlan will stay in football either as a coach or manager, but whatever happens he will be remembered as one of Uruguay’s all time greatest players.

He finished as the joint top scorer of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with five goals, and also won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player as he guided his country to the semi-finals.
