On Times Radio yesterday Mr Heseltine speculated that if Mr Johnson went: “Will the majority now of people who believe Brexit was wrong, have another chance to express their view?”

Labour’s Lord Adonis also hinted Britain could rejoin the EU without Mr Johnson. He said: “You never know how quickly things can change.”

And Brexiteer Peter Bone warned it may happen saying: “It’s another reason why my colleagues are rallying around the PM.”

He went on: “Boris got Brexit done, he got the Free Trade Agreement and he is sorting out the issue with the Northern Ireland protocol.

“If the PM goes we might end up with a leader that shadows the EU and doesn’t take advantage of our new-found freedoms.”
