Everyone's dyeing their hair copper this season so I jumped on the bandwagon and it's done wonders for my complexion

The start of a new decade had me itching for change, and a fresh start. Granted, it took me most of January to build up the courage – but I finally settled on switching up my bleach blonde locks to a coppery red. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have noticed that peaches and bloranges have been rising up the ranks as a must-have shade amongst cool girls. From MUA Katie Jane Hughes, to Madelaine Petsch – soft and dusty reds are all the rage.

I headed to Wavi London, the only people I trust with my hair, to give me this (rather extreme) makeover. Parting with my bleach blonde locks, that took me years of trial and error to get *the* perfect shade, was hard. But, when you get in the mood to change your hair colour – it’s near impossible to shake it off. So, off I trotted to WAVI, a woman-empowered premier hair salon based in East London, founded by celebrity-stylist Cansu in 2018.

The best thing about coppery tones is that they warm up your complexion and give you a glow – perfect for winter, when we’re all feeling a little lacklustre. Cansu Irki has some tips on getting and maintaining this trend: “I mixed 3 different colours from Majirel to achieve the desired copper for my client; the key to getting the perfect shade is to always ask for photo references, as there’s so many variations of this style. This is a colour that requires significant touch-ups as the shade has a tendency to fade, so be prepared to go to the salon more often than usual. I always advise a colour pigmented copper shampoo to be used at every wash outside the salon, especially if your base is bleach blonde.”

For a light ‘true’ copper, a bleached base is preferable, if you want a more auburn hue then going over your natural shade should work. In between salon visits, I use the Christophe Robin Shade Variation Mask Chic in Copper and the Osmo intense copper conditioning cream to keep it looking fresh.

If you do decide to take the plunge, don’t forget to protect your hair with a nourishing and strengthening treatment like Olaplex, and swap to sulphate free shampoos to get the most out of your colour.
