**Spoilers ahead**

Tears came and hearts broke as we lost our first baker in tonight’s Great British Bake Off.

Tonight we lost Dan Chambers as the first baker to be stripped of his apron and sent packing with his spatula and marzipan.

While fans were begging judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith to keep sweet baby Jamie, that didn’t mean they were happy Dan left.

According to Paul it was his cakes that let him down (no surprises) after he, unfortunately, presented a raw fruit cake in the very first challenge of the series.

Jamie Finn thought it was going to be him as he shared his relief at being spared the chop this week.

Dan was the first to go

‘I’m looking to coming back, starting again and convincing people I can bake,’ he laughed afterwards.

Michelle Evans-Fecci earned star baker for the first time of the series.

As viewers let the news settle in they took to social media to declare Dan was ‘robbed’ by being the first to go, manbun a little deflated.

Admitting he had a ‘bad week’ Dan said: ‘Definitely i’ll take away the friendships, can’t imagine how everyone has bonded it’s so strange.’

He added: ‘I’m not going to miss the baking under pressure.’

Paul explained of why they decided Dan was the man go to: ‘He’s a great baker but it all boiled down to his signature bake.’

With Jamie safe for another week, viewers shared their relief the 20-year-old lived to bake another day.

It was a brilliant first episode by all accounts, though – save the normal ditching of one baker who didn’t grease his pan to the level of the other bakers.

Kicking off with the lols, Noel shaded Paul expertly as he declared he didn’t have a heart.

However the laughs soon turned to tears when poor Henry Bird’s icing house fell down right as he was creating his first fruit cake.

He went on to win the technical challenge, but it’s fair to say this kitchen is already reaching boiling point.

Great British Bake Off returns 8pm Tuesday on Channel 4.
