Everton speak out on Carlo Ancelotti speculation as Toffees want 'right appointment'

Everton have broken their silence on reports that Carlo Ancelotti is set to take over from Marco Silva as the club’s head coach. The Toffees were reported to be in negotiations with the Italian early on Monday, with reports suggesting a deal had been agreed in principle.

Everton are believed to be close to appointing Ancelotti as their new manager.

The Toffees have been led by Duncan Ferguson since Silva was fired on December 5.

And having guided the team to a win over Chelsea and a draw with Manchester United, some had believed the ex-striker was in a good position to get the job permanently or at least until the end of the season.

But now, it appears that Ancelotti will be given the role.

The club waited until late in the day to break their silence over the reports, with a club statement confirming that no deal has been agreed.

While the club didn’t distance themselves from the reports, they did state that Ferguson would still take charge of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Leicester.

“In the 11 days since Marco Silva left the Club, the Everton Board has been working to recruit a new permanent manager – and has held meetings with a number of candidates,” the statement read.

“We can confirm that thus far no contract offer has been made and no candidate has chosen to withdraw from the process.

“While the Club is keen to confirm a new permanent manager as soon as possible, the only important duty is that the right appointment is made.

“While our process continues, Duncan Ferguson will remain as caretaker manager and will take charge of the side for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Leicester City.”

Ancelotti’s appointment would be a shrewd move from the Toffees, who are facing an uphill battle for survival in the Premier League.

After a torrid spell of form under Silva’s tenure, they currently find themselves just three points off the drop.

They face Arsenal on Saturday in a must-win tie, but are facing the Gunners at what many believe is the perfect time, with the north London club on the hunt for a new manager of their own.

After being linked to Ancelotti, Arsenal now appear close to appointing Manchester City assistant manager Mikel Arteta as their new boss.

The Spaniard has been Pep Guardiola’s number two since 2016, and reportedly interviewed for the role on Sunday night.

Arteta spent five years at The Emirates, playing 149 times, and also previously played for Everton.

He was another coach reportedly in the frame for Everton until the recent progress with hiring Ancelotti.
