Everton chairman Bill Kenwright 'blocked from donating £2m to Bury by Premier League'

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright offered to gift Football League club Bury £2million during their battle to survive – but was blocked by the Premier League

The Shakers were kicked out of the EFL after being a member for 125 years in August after they failed to prove to the league that they were financial viable.

They were the first club since Maidstone United in 1992 to be expelled.

During negotiations to keep Bury afloat, with hopes of a last gasp takeovers, Kenwright attempted to swoop in to make a generous personal donation, according to the BBC.

But the Football League were forced to turn down the offer due to his association with the Toffees and Premier League rules saying that clubs can’t give financial help to other outfits – regardless of whether it comes from business or personal accounts.

Bill Kenwright wanted to offer Bury £2m to save the club

Football League chief executive Debbie Jevans said: “He was great. [ Everton ] do a huge amount of work in the community.

“The Premier League clubs do a huge amount through solidarity payments and parachute payments, but a football club owner cannot have interests in more than one club.

“If there was an opportunity for help through the community work that happens at Everton, and they do a huge amount, then there is a conversation to be potentially had, but that is very different to Premier League clubs having an involvement in a second club.”

Bury were expelled from the Football League in August

Bury were allowed to accept an offer from Manchester City to use their training ground rent free – because it wasn’t a pecuniary deal.

The Shakers are currently hoping to apply for a place in the National League next season although are in the middle of a winding up petition from the HMRC, due to a £54,000 National Insurance bill, and could be liquidated next month.
